Chapter 15

Harley went to pull out of the church parking lot, but the wind was buffeting his truck, making driving impossible. He looked up into the sky to see black clouds surrounding the town.

More than anything he wanted to get to Nathan and apologize for leaving, but he didn’t think even he could drive the short distance without getting in an accident. Hail pinged the top of his truck and windshield, cracking it. He wasn’t going anywhere.

He backed up so he was closer to the church door and parked. Just as he opened the truck door, the hail started coming down hard. He dashed to the door that was still open. He’d just gotten inside when the wind slammed the doors shut behind him.

“My goodness,” Pastor Powell said. “What is going on out there?”

The wind howled loudly drowning out the hail as it continued to pound onto the roof of the church. “I think we have a pretty severe storm.” It was stating the obvious, but considering just how bad it was getting, Harley felt it worth saying anyway.

“Do you have a TV or a radio to get a weather update?” He didn’t expect any problems, but it was better to be safe than sorry.

The pastor turned and rushed down the aisle, leading him to a room in the back of the church. He grabbed a remote and turned on a large TV mounted to the wall. The man pushed a few buttons and The Weather Channel came up.

“For those of you in western North Carolina and Eastern Georgia, please find shelter. The possibility of tornados are high over the next thirty minutes or so. Already Eastern Tennessee in the Chattanooga area has had two reported touchdowns.”

Harley pulled out his phone, determined to make sure Nathan was okay. Before he could even hit send a siren blared outside. Tornado. He turned to the pastor. “Do you have a shelter?” he shouted above the howling wind and driving rain and hail.

It was a good thing they were inside. He just prayed no one was out in this weather. As it was there would be damage the town would sustain, but that was relatively easy to fix. Someone dying wasn’t.

“Follow me.” The pastor led him down a set of stairs to the basement. They stood there for several minutes listening to the raging weather above them. It was scary. Then the sound Harley had hoped he wouldn’t hear came. It was like a freight train running right at them.

He’d only heard that terrifying sound once before in his life, but once was more than enough. There was a tornado nearby, if not right on top of them. Based on some of the loud bangs against the building, Harley would guess debris was flying outside. What he didn’t know was if the church itself was coming apart or objects from somewhere else were being thrown around.

“Would you like to pray with me?” Pastor Powell’s offer was more than welcome.

Harley was terrified for Nathan, for Jax, for the town of Cedar Falls.
